Cover Story
Time to shed the ‘claysmith' tag
That six of Nadal's 10 major titles have come in Paris skews his accomplishments in a manner unbecoming of a player ranked among the best across surfaces. The career Grand Slam having been dispensed with — Nadal has won each of the four Grand Slams at least once — there is little pressure on the southpaw to round up his haul by adding a specific major to his collection. What remains is the setting right of a record that doesn't justify the forceful presence that Nadal has been on courts other than clay. Over to Kunal Diwan.

APPRECIATION/SHAHID AFRIDI
An entertainer, pure and simple
Afridi would not have been Afridi had he not courted controversy every now and then. For a captain, it was always a challenge to keep him under control, for Afridi would pursue unconventional methods to achieve his goals. There were times when he would cross the limit, but then he played cricket on his terms. From a new ball bowler to a leg-spinner to making a mark as a hard-hitting batsman, Afridi surely went a long way. A tribute by Vijay Lokapally.
BCCI AWARDS
A proud moment for all of us — Dhoni
Members of the World Cup-winning Indian team were felicitated and presented cheques worth Rs. two crore each by BCCI President Shashank Manohar and BCCI Secretary N. Srinivasan. The support staff of the team too were honoured and presented cheques of Rs. 50 lakh each.

KICKING AROUND
FIFA in deep crisis
With corruption allegations coming thick and fast from every direction, FIFA and its top executives are on a sticky wicket, writes Brain Glanville.
Yaya on a dream run
Yaya Toure is now a giant in Manchester City folklore having scored the winner in the FA Cup final to bring a trophy back to the blue side of Manchester for the first time in 35 years. He also scored in the semifinals. His rise to prominence is certainly one of rags to riches. By Kieran Canning.
Midfield maestro
The summer of 2008 saw Xavi in the best form of his life as Spain ended 44 years of hurt by winning the European Championships. His goal in the semi-final against Russia and an assist for Fernando Torres to score the only goal of the final against Germany was again rewarded with individual honours as he was voted player of the tournament. Since then there has been no looking back. Over to Kieran Canning.
SANTOSH TROPHY
Bengal continues to reign supreme
Manipur, a tiny state, did the giant-killing act with glee as it put up a fine show of force and finesse on its way to the final. Though it lost the final to Bengal by a narrow 2-1 margin, it left the tournament with its head held high. Over to Amitabha Das Sharma.
I-LEAGUE
Salgaocar owes it to Bencherifa
The coach from Morocco did an excellent job of motivating his players and instilling confidence in them. He turned players such as Luciano Sabrosa, Francis Fernandes, Rocus Lamare, Gilbert Oliveira and Rino Anto among others into a winning force, writes Amitabha Das Sharma.
